It may look and act like a Lunar Lander, but this is no brainchild of NASA. With about 50 structural proteins in the virion, 171-kb of a double stranded DNA genome packaged inside a 120 nm x 86 nm head, and a sophisticated tail to efficiently deliver its genome into an Escherichia coli host, bacteriophage T4 (as depicted here in a cryo-electron micrograph structural model) is one of the most complex and well-studied tailed bacteriophages.
