A longitudinal cross-section of the Arabidopsis root meristem with “Brother of Brainbow” clones is imaged with a Leica SP2 confocal microscope. The middle panel shows a root tip 3 days after induction of CRE recombinase, leading to the formation of broad clones. The outer roots show the six possible expression combinations as a result of single (CFP or RFP together with YFP), double (magenta, CFP, or RFP), or no (YFP) recombination events in the parental germ cells, mediated by CRE.
